IAH: The Houston hub where distance writes the rules
IAH is a major gateway with real scale. It can connect to Houston, but the short-window strategy is usually airside efficiency, not city heroics.
Build the access plan first
IAH can reach Houston, but the airport sits far enough out that leaving should be treated as a real operation. Public transit exists, rideshare may be simpler, and the return buffer should be treated like sacred aviation law.
One worthwhile experience with a protected return beats a rushed checklist.
Choose transportation before the adventure
The ground plan depends on the hour, bags, budget, and target. Houston traffic and distance are the villains here, wearing very ordinary shoes.
Best use of the layover
Use IAH as a conservative WanderPort. Short window: stay airside. Long window: pick Downtown, The Heights, Buffalo Bayou, or one specific Houston target.
